Table Tennis by Paul Myers

Round Two of the Handicap Cup saw a mixture of easy wins and a few titanic battles in the Aldershot and District Table Tennis League.

There was a great match between Tennis E and Frimley B which saw Tennis storm into a 4-1 lead. Trevor Dodd won two with Gordon Courtney and Bill Mcintosh winning one each. With Tennis needing one more set for victory Hilary Grieg, Chris Lines and Pete Good all won for Frimley to level the match at 4-4. The final game was between Gordon Courtney(1pt start) and Frimley's Hilary Grieg. Grieg won 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 and 11-9 to win 44-33 and give Frimley B an amazing comeback win.

Frimley E hosted Ash D and they both went nip and tuck for the first eight sets where the score was 4-4. In the deciding set Roger Whichelow(Frimley E) recieved a 30pts start from Frank Winnard(Ash D). Although Winnard won all four games he still lost 52-44 which saw Whichelow and Frimley E go through to the third round. Bob Murrell won all three for the losing side with Paul Phelan(2), Jon Ball(1) and Roger Whichelow(2) the points scorers for Frimley.

Division One's Ash B had a thriller against Kingfisher B of Division Three. Both teams halved the spoils for the first six sets where the result stood at 3-3. Karim Lawji then beat Stan Burton to give Kingfisher B a 4-3 lead and needing one more win for the victory. Unfortunately for Kingfisher in stepped Martin Gilbey and Dave Gilham giving away 17pts and 14 pts respectively and they both won to give Ash B a 5-4 win and a passage into round three. Martin Gilbey was the star man for Ash grabbing a hard fought treble.

Cody D and Fleet CC C proved that the handicapper ought to be proud of himself with eight of the nine sets won by five points or less. Cody D edged the match 5-4 with Mick Strode beating Robert Brook(15pts start) 44-39 in the final set. On the evening John Asprey and Strode won two each with Andy Stenning getting a single. Kevin Bissell was the man of the match grabbing a maximum but all to no avail as he was on the losing side.

There were wins for Division Four's Fleet CC B and Farnham Cohesion who knocked out higher division opposition. Mark Holbrook and Marge Massey doubled up for Fleet with Dean Robertson and Dong Ming-Lau grabbing braces for Cohesion.

Other teams through to the third round after easy wins are Central B, Tennis C, Frimley C, Central A, Frimley D, Ash C, Ash A and Ash H.
