There were a couple of tight matches in the KO Cups with Ash F supplying a shock with a win over Cody C in the Fourth Division. The match had see-sawed with Cody taking a 4-3 lead thanks to a double by Spike Hagan and single successes from Dave Hewitt and John Asprey. At this point Graham Thomas had won a couple for Ash and Brian Lunn had beaten Asprey. Lunn then beat Hewitt to set up a decider between the two unbeaten players, Thomas and Hagan which Thomas won to ease Ash F into the semi-final. The remaining quarter final saw Crawley Ridge D, seeking a treble, whitewash Tennis J thanks to the efforts of Eric Wong, Yeuk Wan and David Marchant.
In the Third Division Tennis H eased past Ash E 5-4. The match had reached 4-4 with Ash grateful for a Terry French maximum and a single from Les Knight. For tennis Charles Burton had won a couple and Dave Lewis and Paul Jarvis one apiece. The ninth set was between Knight and Jarvis and actually turned out to be a comfortable win for Jarvis. Despite having only two players, Kieran Daniel and Ted Cornell, Frimley E beat Fleet B 6-3.
In the First Division Cup Tennis B proved too good for Frimley B winning 5-3. Paul Myers won all three for Tennis with Eliot Tilley twice successful. Clive Welsman won a couple for Frimley.
In the Second Division Cup Cody A eased into the semi-final, 5-2, over Frimley C. Both Paul Mission and Duncan Sibbick were undefeated for Cody.
Still no 6-6 results in the Handicap Cup with the closest a 6.5 to 5.5 win for Crawley Ridge B over Frimley E. Frimley’s task was not helped by having only two players, Kieran Daniel and Ted Cornell, thereby conceding five sets from the outset. Still they battled hard with Daniel winning two singles and halving the other against Corin Moore. Cornell won two singles but lost to Ken Thompson in what proved to be the decisive set. Cornell needed to win the final game 11-8 or better but lost it 11-9. Tennis B beat Crawley Ridge A thanks to a maximum from Simon Turner and all three doubles. Phil Garrett and Dave Skellern each won two singles for Crawley Ridge. Ash A and Tennis D were all square after nine sets but then Ash snagged the last three sets to ease to victory. It was a team effort with Dave Gilham unbeaten in singles, Dave Phelps winning a couple and Dave Halfpenny winning and halving a singles. Mehrdad Abutalebi was the best player for Tennis with 1.5 points from his singles. Ash G beat Tennis C 8-3 with Ash racing into a 6-0 lead. Bob Murrell was unbeaten for Ash with Ray Mears and Dave Brown each bagging pairs. Ash D’s hopes of success in all three competitions was dashed when they were easily beaten by Tennis K, 10-2. Graham Dorey and Keith Johnson were both unbeaten in the singles with Andy Barnard winning twice.
