Table Tennis by Paul Myers The Aldershot and District Table Tennis League has now finished for the 2007/08 Season. All four divisions produced an excellent standard of table tennis and some very interesting results culminating in runaway wins for Central B ( Div One), Cody A ( Div Two) and Cody D ( Div Four)and a close finish between Broadmoor and Tennis F ( Div Three).  Central B are the new Champions of Division One with Central A runners-up. In third place were Central C giving the Farnham Central Club a clean sweep. At the other end of the table Ash C and Tennis A were relegated with Frimley A playing well to avoid relegation by 3pts. Norman Swift ( Central A) topped the averages on 97% with Graham Watts ( Central B) 94%, Phil Snelson ( Central A) 92% and David Lloyd ( Central B) 87% just behind. The difference at the end of the season was Central B's ability to produce a good third player in Peter Millard (70%) and Paul Myers (65%) with Central A struggling for a third player over 40%. Other notable performances were Ross Saxby's 80% for fourth placed Ash A who could potentially improve on this season and Dennis Perrett's 75% for previous champions Shackleford. In Division Two Cody A's success was due to the consistency of all three of their players namely John Harvey 82%( top of the averages), Peter Anthony 76% and Paul Mission 74% who romped this division. In second place but 17pts behind Cody were Tennis B with Dave Hewitt on 74% and Stuart Middlemiss and Jack Davies both getting over 60%. Next season will be very interesting for both sides as they encounter the top boys and a completely different challenge. Ash D finished a respectable third with Frank Winnard topping his teams averages on 75% closely followed by Nigel Tustin on 71%. Dave Joyce, Lawrence Dack and Rod Cutler also had an encouraging season all averaging over 60% and helping their team finish fourth. At the bottom Tennis E and Ash F were relegated and were simply outclassed in this division, even so Gordon Earle 66% and Shaun Newbold 50% competed very well for Tennis. Other noteworthy performances were from Dave Jarvis 78% whose team finished fifth and Kin Chans 71% for Cody B. In Division Three Broadmoor pipped all the way leaders Tennis F to the Crown by 3pts. The difference in the end seemed to come down to the fourth members in each squad with Broadmoor's John Brunton's 61% outpointing Tennis's John Wood. All in all both teams had a excellent season with Tennis F's Ian Brown topping the averages on 86% closely followed by Ron Wale on 72% with Roger Mills on 68%. Broadmoor's players Armstrong (73%) , Zhang (71%) and Deacon (62%) all had a great season. Bourne B competed well and finished in third, five points ahead of fourth placed Kingfisher A. Andy Barnard in his first season in Division Three averaged 75% for Bourne which was a great achievement and showed that the boy has a bit of class, his team mate Butler also did well getting 65%. Roy Pike 69%, Graham Marshall 59% and Derek Read all had a steady season for Kingfisher.Others to play well this year included Roopun on 77% for Frimley C, Courtney for Tennis G on 75% , Geoff Green on 74% for Kingfisher B and Dave Thomas 71% for Cody C. At the bottom of the pile Ash G and Ash H fought hard all season but ultimately were relegated. Bob Murrell (Ash G) 68% proved he is too good to go down to Div Four as did Brian Lunn (Ash H) on 53%. Finally Division Four was won by Cody D by 16pts from Ash K. Cody D simply proved different class in this division and it was obvious from an early stage they would win it in a canter. John Asprey 89%, Phil Russell 78%, George Brown 61% and Len Williams were the star men for Cody D. Ash K though did themselves proud and their top man Dave Phillips once again was ahead of the pack in the averages on 96% with the admirable Ron Davies, Brian Simpson and Basil Warner all backing him up really well. It remains to be seen how the team will fare in Division Three next season but Dave Phillips deserves to ply his trade in the higher division and it will be interesting to see how he performs. Tennis H and Cody E made a real fight of it for second place eventually finishing third and fourth only 1pt and 3pts respectively off second position. Tennis H's Paul Jarvis ended the season on 86% with Paul Shakespeare 73%, John Page 71% and Graham Dorey failing by the narrowest of margins, but watch this space because they will give everyone a run for their money next season. Cody E's Dave Hewitt and Mick Strode played good table tennis getting 80% and 60% respectively with John Warburton and Norrie Short scoring over 50% to finish a respectable fourth. Other notable performances this season came from Mark Holbrook 80% for Fleet CC B whose team finished in mid-division and Les Vail's 68% for Bentley B.
