It was round 2 week of the Handicap Cup in the Aldershot Table Tennis League and as usual there were the fair share of close encounters. Kevin Bissell was the hero of the hour for Frimley F, his 11-6 last end victory over Roy Chittenden of Fleet CC C capped off a fine three wins which saw his side to a 5-4 win, also just edging home 5-4 were Broadmoor B, Mark Armstrong kept his nerve in overturning a 14 point deficit to Fleet CC B’s Ron Bartlett to win the decisive finale 44-38, Andy Appleby was unlucky as his fine hat trick was to no avail for the beaten side. Yet another last end decider was won by Tennis F’s Ron Wale, he came from a game down to pip Paul Jarvis of Tennis C 41-36, racking up a personal full house into the bargain. Funnily enough there were no close matches as Frimley D beat Crawley Ridge A 5-4, other than Barry Baxter’s 43-41 victory over Ken Thompson. This, one of Barry’s three wins on the night, therefore proved to be the turning point, but it was Anthony Connelly who clinched the deal, comfortably beating Russell Gibbs in the ninth match. Also making the next round and following up their good showing in last years Cup were Ash G, Hudson Foley and Dave Brown each winning two out of two as they eased past Tennis E 5-1. Two of the top sides in Division 1 were matched up in an intriguing bout, Broadmoor A eventually seeing off Central A 5-3, Barry Morton proved to be the star man for Broadmoor, he did just enough to keep Phil Snelson at bay to complete a hat trick of wins. Cody F overcame their A team 5-3 in a very close one, Kim Phillips and Alan Richards both ended up with two wins as the A team tried valiantly to pull back some big deficits which proved just too tough.
Also making the hat for the draw were Ash D who beat Tennis H 5-2, Tennis G, Roy Pike’s three seeing them home 5-2 against Frimley C, Frimley E who waltzed to a 5-0 win over Crawley Ridge B, Tennis D for whom Graham McCulley won all three and Ash B who beat Tennis B 5-2
