It was the first round of the Divisional cups in the Aldershot & District Table Tennis League and in Division 1 Central A's talisman Phil Selson roared back to form to lead his men to a 5-4 triumph over Ash A, Phil showed those traditional Yorkshire traits of style, grace and flair in his three wins, the most impressive being an uncommon straight sets beating of Graham Watts. Scott Ayers kept Ash in it with a fine win over Dennis Perrett but to no avail. The classy Dave Phelps secured a maximum as Central B strolled past Tennis B 5-2, Robin Pretty in the supporting roll with two out of two.
In Division 2 Ash C showed the green shoots of recovery after a wobbly start to the season, Martin Gilbey and Mike Levey with a couple each as they beat Cody B 5-3.
It went down to the wire at Frimley as their B team pipped Broadmoor B 5-4, Robert Brittain claiming the plaudits and the last game of the night to finish up with three fine scalps.
Les Knight carried his good Division 3 league form into the cup, his trio leading Ash E to a 5-2 win over Frimley C, Terry's French and Kavanagh both weighed in with important five set triumphs of their own for Ash. What looked a close encounter on paper ended up being nothing of the sort after Frimley D could only raise two men for the visit of Tennis F, Colin Baggott, Eliot Tilley and Paul Jarvis rubbed the salt in to streak home 5-0. Gordon Courtney and Bob Brown bagged two apiece as Tennis H waltzed by Cody C 5-1, Tony McDowell picking up the solitory point for Cody, he did also inflict the first defeat of the season on Courtney later in the evening as the two teams played out the dead rubbers, i'll give you the benefit of the doubt though Gordon!
In Division 4 a hard working performance from Josh Taylor , winning both of his games in five, led Ash J past a spirited Fleet CC C. Brian Lunn weighed in with two of his own for Ash, but the card was a lot closer than the 5-2 scoreline suggests.
John Saville won the first match of the night but that was the only joy for Farnham Cohesion B as they were beaten 5-1 at Tennis J, Michael Bly and John Page each went home unbeaten, all games being on three straight. Cody F's James Hodges got his moneys worth as all three of his games against Ash G went to five, he beat Terry Kavanagh and Ray Mears but ran out of steam while two up on Bill Abbott, agonisingly going down deuce in the fifth. These herculean efforts couldn't be matched though, Ash eventually runing out 5-2 winners.
Just one league game to report this week as Frimley A beat Tennis A 6-4, Rob Hawes, Andrew Davies and Clive Asprey winning solid two's for Frimley as did John Taylor for Tennis, but the game of the night looked to be the doubles with Tennis triumphing 11-8 11-9 15-17 2-11(!) 14-12, I don't know who played but I bet their tea was cold by the time it finished..
